VARIABLE SPEED PUMPS

  • Traditional pool pumps are single-speed versions, meaning they run at one speed all the time. Single-speed pumps are inefficient. Single-speed pumps are often a home’s highest electricity user outside of the HVAC system. Even in Florida, where our electrical cost is only about $0.11/kwh, a 1 horsepower single-speed pump costs about $0.20/hour to run – or about $1.60/day. That equates to $584 yearly! Single-speed pumps are so inefficient that most do not meet the new Department of Energy Efficiency Requirements that have phased out all but the smallest single-speed pumps.

Variable speed pumps are much more energy efficient. With a variable speed pump, you can change the speed of the pump’s RPMs. When you cut the running speed of the pump in half, the energy consumption drops to 1/8th of what it was prior. This is due to the Pump Affinity Law, an engineering principle.

Using a variable speed pump to drop the pump speed in half, we can reduce our electrical cost significantly, saving from $360 – $600 for the average pool, depending on pump size and run time.

Another significant advantage of variable-speed pool pumps is that they operate much more quietly than a single-speed pump – you can hardly hear them running. Variable speed pumps also last much longer than a single speed pump, generally 6-8 years+. Depending on the model, they typically come with a 2, 3 or 4-year warranty.

Pentair is our generally preferred brand of variable-speed pumps. Their most popular models are the SuperFlo VST, WhisperFlo VST, and the IntelliFlo3 VSF. These pumps have a built-in timer system to control when the turn on/off and what speed they run. They even have the ability to set different programs to have the pump run at a higher speed in the morning, to run a vacuum system, for example, and then drop down to a lower, more energy-efficient speed for general filtration.

A new variable speed pool pump can cost anywhere from around $1,700 to $2,700, depending on the model best suited to your particular setup. The pumps will ‘pay for themselves’ in 3-4 years based on annual energy savings.

POOL HEATERS

  • Electric heat pumps are most common in Florida due to their low cost of use and heating ability. Heat pumps draw their heat from the surrounding air. The only electricity needed for a heat pump is to run a fan and a compressor.

A heat pump can maintain a swimming pool at 80-90ºF plus if the outside temperature is above 45-50º. When below 45º, there is not enough ‘heat’ in the air to be extracted. The annual cost of use is about $250-750, dependent upon usage.

Prices for heat pumps vary with the heating capacity but are generally in the $5,000 range. A permit and separate electrical line may be needed if the heat pump is not a replacement but a new installation. If electrical work is needed for your heat pump installation, we can refer you to electricians that we regularly work with that are very familiar with heat pump installations.

Because of their relatively simple operation, heat pumps usually carry a 5-year warranty and can easily last 10-15 years.

    • Using natural gas or propane, a gas heater is a quick yet expensive way to increase water temperature. Their cost of use is why gas heaters are more common in smaller pools or pools with spas. They heat water effectively, operate in any temperature, and can effectively in any outdoor temperature. Gas heaters cost about $4,000 installed and generally last 5-10 years. Yearly operating cost, dependent upon use, could range from $300 for occasional use to several thousand dollars for regular use. If the gas heater is not a replacement but a new installation, a permit and gas line to the equipment pad will be needed, adding to the cost.
    • Solar heat for your pool is almost free from an ongoing cost perspective. All that is needed are black plastic panels on your roof with some plumbing and a solar controller. When your pump is running, water is pushed up into the panels and warmed by the sun before flowing back into the pool. Generally, you can obtain about eleven degrees of added heat with solar. Solar alone is not likely to keep you swimming year-round. If you also used a solar blanket nightly, you could expect 80º plus water from March to October. Solar heating costs upwards of $5,000 to install with little operating costs and generally last at least ten years. Solar panels are secured to your roof with drilled-in fasteners.
